As soon as Pleo was through the door it was time to quickly see what he was all about.

Pleo is one of the most advanced toy robots I have ever seen. It was designed by Caleb Chung who helped make the Furby a number of years ago. Pleo has a bunch of motors, sensors, microphones and more to help it move around and learn it’s environment.

Pleo Features

* Pleo uses a camera-based vision system to sense it’s way around by light
* 8 touch sensors are available in his head, chin, shoulders, back and one in each of it’s 4 feet.
* 2 microphones let Pleo hear from both sides of his head
* 14 force feedback sensors are found (one on each joint)
* tilt sensor (Pleo gets angry when you flip him over)
* Mouth sensor for detecting when he has something in there
* Mini USB port can be used to download new personalities
* An SD card slot is also used for ad-ons
* IR transmitters for use with 2 Pleo’s to communicate with each other

As you can see, that’s a fairly impressive set of features for a robotic toy dinosaur.

Pleo Review

The review model of Pleo came with a couple of batteries. Charge time is about 3 hours… so after a few hours of waiting it was time to switch Pleo on for the first time. When Pleo is used for the first time he starts out in the initial birthing stage which takes about 10 minutes to complete. In this birth mode Pleo just sits there looking around occasionally. To speed up this stage and make Pleo more confident you can pat his head and back (where his sensors are). Pleo’s eyes also open and close quite a bit in this phase.

When Pleo stands up he has then reached the next phase which is the Hatchling Stage. The hatchling stage see’s Pleo starting to walk around and sense his environment. This stage lasts around 45 minutes and you will see Pleo start to work on his behaviour. In this stage, new sounds will be made and he will also take short naps just like a baby would. Once Pleo is done with his hatchling stage it is time to recharge the battery as it only lasts about an hour.

Once recharged, Pleo enters the Juvenile stage which is the last of his growth stages. In this stage Pleo will now exhibit a full range of movements.

Pleo Details

Pleo measures 21 inches in length when stretched out and stands around 7 inches tall. He is well built and covered in a rubber type skin. The amount of motors that control Pleo under his skin make him look amazing while walking about the floor. The creators have done a fantastic job with building him.

Pleo Extras

If you happen to get bored of Pleo then don’t worry. Pleo has a USB port and an SD card slot built in. These are used to upload new personalities to Pleo. Not only are the official updates and modifications to his brain, but also a bunch of enthusiasts also create new personalities to expand Pleo beyond his basic programming. A mixture of these make the rubber skinned robot dinosaur a cool thing to own.

Pleo Review Conclusion

I am amazed at the quality of this product and it has been a cool few weeks having him walk around the living room. The only downside is that the price tag is quite high (currently £168.99 at Amazon)… but due to Pleo’s shear complexity and coolness the price tag also seems quite small if that makes sense. Pleo comes highly recommended.

Another review from Stuart Miles
published on 29 April 2008

Pleo is a friendly looking robot dinosaur Camarasaurus, but is it any better than other robots on the market, or is this just another executive toy destined to become an expensive paperweight? We agree to babysit one to find out.
The 21-inch long, 7.5-inch high latex covered dinosaur robot comes with a power charger, a leaf for feeding and a thin instruction book. The latex skin covers an exoskeleton that has over 100 custom-designed gears, and 14 motors for highly-articulated movement, the skin also covers eight sensors waiting to be stroked, spoken to, viewed on and even moved and using the sensors Pleo reacts accordingly.
There is no remote control, no quick fire way of controlling it and once it's out of the box, you're on your own. The battery, which gives you around 40 minutes of play before needing another 3-4 hour charge, slots in under his belly and luckily there is an on/off switch for when you've had enough. If the battery does run out, which of course it will, then Pleo nods of to sleep rather than keel over and play dead. Beyond that there is a mute button if the sniffles, groans and munching noises get too much, and a USB socket and SD Card slot so you can connect Pleo to your computer and download new behaviours from the supporting Pleo world. Pleoworld offers you information, the chance to chat with other Pleo owners and a place to get downloads. It's like The Caravan Club only for people that have spent 250 quid on a baby robot dinosaur.
And like any newborn dinosaur there is a hatching stage to endure. This lasts for up to 10 minutes and sees your new friend trying to stand up, yawn and generally getting used to what's going on.
The more you interact the better this, say makers Ugobe, will go. Of course you're not done yet and you've still got another 45 minute stage to go through before you've got a fully functioning robot 1-week-old Camarasaurus. Once fully fledged it has a range of tricks up its sleeve to impress you with (it doesn't actually) and a hour in you'll either think it's the best thing in the world or have got bored already.
So what can you do? Well there seems to be a lot of stroking and petting. Commands to sit will work (if you've downloaded the behaviour) however don't expect your little critter to play ball (did they even have balls in the Jurassic period?).
If you're looking for a bonding experience you can feed it with the included plastic leaf and listen out for the munching noises or if Pleo isn't hungry play tug of war, although Pleo is no T-Rex so expect to win everytime.
Being over 30, I fall into the "Lets get one for the office" and on this basis would have to agree it's a heavy paperweight. After showing everyone I know the new gizmo and even thinking about taking it to a couple of meetings, the fact that it doesn't really do much and the battery life is so poor it's already started to gather dust. Mind you, it looks good just sitting there on the desk. This isn't your average piece of plastic tat. Feeling that maybe it would fair better with kids, we gave the Pleo to a 2-year-old girl. The response as you can imagine was one of wonder and awe. It was kissed, patted, cuddled and manhandled and the poor family dog was
forgotten about for 10 minutes. Then Pleo ended up in a 9-year-old girl's hands and it finally got to learn the true meaning ofbeing loved. Photographed from all angles, cuddled, kissed, patted, and played with, in the 20 minute experiment (the things we do for you) Pleo had not only replaced the family pet (they didn't actually have one but if they did it would have),
but the Nintnedo Wii as well. When asked which our 9-year-old would prefer given the choice, the Wii or a robot that doesn't do much, we surprisingly got "Pleo". However her parents, quickly suggested that the novelty and excitement would soon wear off probably after a week and annoyance at the battery life.

VERDICT
Pleo is a very clever robot that is sure to entertain your kids as they look after their new family dog replacement.
However as there is no remote control or ability to control your robot pet, you might find yourself, just as with a new puppy, getting frustrated when it doesn't do what you want it to.
This is frighteningly the way that robots and no doubt pets (Just as Sci-Fi writer Philip K Dick
predicted) will go, and the soft latex skin only helps the realism.

The Dart

Interactive 6000 Electronic Dartboard
Product Description :
Recommended for Ages: 8+ years
The Interactive 3000 features a 13" target area with an 8-player LED score display.
The Draganflyer X6 helicopter uses SteadyFlight™ technology to achieve its incredible stability. This system consists of an onboard processor running thousands of lines of code and receiving data from eleven on-board sensors (three gyros, three accelerometers, three magnetometers, one barometric pressure sensor, and one GPS receiver). The SteadyFlight™ system combines real-time data from all eleven sensors to make the Draganflyer X6 helicopter more stable than any other helicopter in its class. Have complete confidence knowing that SteadyFlight™ technology is helping you fly like a pro even though you may have little or no flight experience.

6 Degrees of Freedom

The Draganflyer X6 helicopter can be piloted to any open point in three-dimensional space. It is able to maneuver in any direction, and does not need to be turned to face the direction it is flying. Fly with complete freedom of movement while the Draganflyer X6 helicopter maintains total stability.

Advanced Power System

Electric Powered Flight

The power system is the core of the Draganflyer X6 helicopter, and is what provides thrust for flight and maneuvering. Power is stored in the battery, passed to the motors, converted to mechanical energy, and then turned into thrust. There is enough thrust for the Draganflyer X6 and a 500 gram payload, which can be any of the specialized cameras systems.

Long Lasting & Fast Charging Lithium Polymer Battery

The Draganflyer X6 helicopter battery stores enough power for flights up to 25 minutes long. Using lithium polymer cell technology, the Draganflyer X6 battery is significantly lighter and higher capacity than an equivalently shaped conventional rechargeable battery. With its integrated power and balancer connectors, recharging is simple and takes only 30 minutes. A spare battery installs easily so you can continue flying while the used one charges.

Quiet & Lightweight Carbon Fiber Rotors

The rotors use mechanical energy from the motors to generate thrust. These rotors are molded from carbon fiber into a shape specifically designed for optimal thrust at maximum efficiency. High efficiency also results in low noise (less than 65dB at one meter) and longer flight times. Carbon fiber makes the rotors ultra light and ultra strong.

Powerful & Efficient Brushless Motors

Six custom brushless motors convert the electric power from the battery into rotational mechanical energy. These electric brushless motors generate twice the power of conventional brushed motors, without any brushes to ever wear out. They are also more efficient for longer flight times, maintenance free, and extremely quiet. Their speed and torque has been custom designed for directly driving the rotor blades - no gears required!

R/C Hobbys

Micro Mosquito 3.0 Mini RC Indoor Helicopter RTF (Ready-To-Fly)

From Interactive Toy Concepts LTD

Product Description:

The new Micro Mosquito 3.0 Indoor RC helicopter is only 6.5 inches long but flies with the control of a full size co-axial model helicopter. Guidance is provided by a three channel transmitter operating on a 9 volt battery (not included). Range of the saucer is 200 feet in most cases. At over 4000 feet above sea level some of our customers are unable to get the blimp to float due to low air density. If you are over 4000ft we recommend you purchase a high-lift blimp envelope.

* Length: 52"
* Width: 24"

The helium balloon is refillable and the plain silver design allows you to put decals on the blimp - great for advertising!

Note: This product is only for indoor use, do not attempt to operate outside.
